Things We Didn’t Appreciate Growing Up

Growing up, there were so many things we took for granted, things that felt ordinary, even annoying at times. We rushed through those moments, eager to “grow up” and experience independence. But now? E don blur? Now we look back and realize just how priceless those simple parts of life really were.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the little things we once overlooked.

Free Food

Remember when food just… appeared?

Breakfast was ready. Lunch was packed. Dinner was served. And somehow, we still had the audacity to complain:
“Why is it not what I want?”
“I’m tired of eating this!”

Now, as adults, food is no longer just “there.” It requires money, planning, cooking, and sometimes even sacrifice. That plate of rice, that simple meal we ignored or criticized, now represents effort, love, and responsibility.

Free food wasn’t just about eating, it was about being cared for without realizing it.

We may not be able to go back, but we can carry the lessons forward

The Freedom to Make Mistakes

As kids, we made mistakes all the time and someone was always there to correct us.

We got things wrong in school. We misunderstood situations. We made poor choices. But instead of harsh consequences, we were guided, corrected, and given another chance.

Now, one mistake fit kpai you. There are real consequences, financial, emotional, even professional. The safety net is thinner, and sometimes, nonexistent.

Back then, mistakes were part of learning.
Now, they often feel like setbacks we can’t afford.

But looking back, that freedom to fail without fear? That was a gift.

Free Clothes

Clothes used to magically appear in our wardrobes.

Birthdays, holidays, random shopping trips, new outfits would come, whether we liked them or not. And yes, we complained:
“I don’t like this!”
“This is not my style!”

Now? Clothes cost money. Good clothes cost even more. And suddenly, those “boring” or “unfashionable” outfits don’t seem so bad anymore.

They were provided out of love, not obligation. And we wore them without understanding the effort behind them.

No Real Stress

Back then, homework felt like the biggest problem in the world.

We would sigh, procrastinate, complain, and wish for freedom. But compared to adult responsibilities, bills, deadlines, career pressure, life decisions homework was simple.

It had structure. It had clear instructions. And most importantly, it had an end.

Adult stress doesn’t always come with instructions or deadlines. Sometimes it just lingers.

Looking back, homework wasn’t stress, it was enjoyment.

The Ability to Make Friends Easily

As children, making friends was effortless.

You could meet someone today and be best friends by tomorrow. No overthinking, no fear of judgment, no complicated social rules.

A simple “Do you want to play?” was enough, and “I will tell my mummy” solved most issues.

Now, making genuine connections takes time, effort, and sometimes courage. People are more guarded. Trust is harder to build, and it takes so much effort even impossible, to rebuild bonds and regain trust.

That childhood openness, the ability to connect without fear, was something truly special.

We may not be able to go back, but we can carry the lessons forward:

  • Appreciate what you have now
  • Be kinder to your younger self
  • And never underestimate the value of simple things.
